Gallery reception
for local artists
Watercolor painter Susan Bourdet of Jefferson and fiber artist Pat Spark of Albany will be the featured artists during October at Gallery Calapooia, 222 First Ave. W. in downtown Albany.
The gallery’s First Friday Reception, from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, Oct. 5, will feature their work, along with 17 other mid-valley artists. Beer, wine and snacks will be served.
Music will be provided by “String Theory,” with Tom Hughes on mandolin and guitar and Kim Collar on guitar and violin.
Bourdet’s nature paintings combine soft-edged, impressionistic backgrounds with delicately detailed foregrounds, a technique she has developed over 30 years of painting. For this show, Bourdet has created 14 new watercolors inspired by the colors and textures of late summer and fall in the Willamette Valley. The 2019 Susan Bourdet calendars will be available at the reception, and the artist will sign them upon request.
Spark is a felt maker, a teacher and an author of books on felting. She creates naturally dyed and botanically printed silk scarves. This year Spark’s new work is inspired by two interesting aspects of felt making: “differential shrinkage” and the the use of sumi ink painted directly onto the felt. Spark will share more about her explorations with felt at the First Friday Reception.
Gallery Calapooia hours are 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. The gallery is a nonprofit organization and donations to it are tax-deductible. For more information, call (541) 971-5701 or visit http://www.gallerycalapooia.com.
