Drive less for chance to win

Local residents can win prizes by finding ways to economize on their travel in the Get There Challenge for the Linn, Benton and Lincoln counties, which runs through Oct. 21.

Participants are encouraged to get active, save money, and track their trips for a chance to win prizes. Participants track trips by bike, bus, walking, rolling, carpool/vanpool, and teleworking at GetThereOregon.org for chances to win prizes that include an overnight trip to Chinook Winds Casino Resort in Lincoln City, one $1,000 Bike Friday gift card, two $500 cash cards, and more.

The event is sponsored by the Oregon Cascades West Council of Governments’ Cascades West Transportation Options and the Oregon Department of Transportation.

Lebanon orchestra seeks string players

The Lebanon Community Orchestra is beginning practices for its winter concert.

The orchestra has openings for violin, viola, cello and double bass players. Members hail from Lebanon, Albany, Sweet Home and other surrounding communities. Practices are at the Lebanon High School on Monday nights from 6:45 to 8:15 p.m.

‘Mama Mia’ on stage this week

Albany Civic Theater is staging “Momma Mia” through Oct. 12 at 111 First Ave.

The hit musical comedy, based on ABBA’s hits, tells the story of a young woman’s search, on the eve of her wedding, for her birth father on a sunny Greek island paradise. Her quest brings three men from her mother’s past back to the island they last visited 20 years ago.

Performances are at 7:30 p.m. on Sept. 26, 27 and 28, and Oct. 3, 4, 5, 10, 11, and 12. Matinee performances are offered at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 29 and Oct. 6.

RAIN mixer for entrepreneurs

Oregon Regional Accelerator and Innovation Network (RAIN) will host a Mentor Mixer from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 10, at The Lobby, 661 S. Main St. in Lebanon.

People who are interested in sharing experience in business and start-ups, innovation and technology are invited. Any prospective entrepreneurs or new business owners are also welcome.

The event will follow a “speed-dating” format in which entrepreneurs and mentors will mix and mingle to find a mentorship match, with open networking to follow.

90 or about to be? Celebrate Friday

The Sweet Home Senior Center will host a gathering to honor local seniors who have celebrated, or will celebrate, their 90th birthday this year, and those who have already passed that milestone.

The event, at 10 a.m. Friday, Oct. 11, will include an informal time of friendship and recognition of those seniors, and light refreshments.

Squarenaders to hold Hobo Dance

Sweet Home Squarenaders will hold a Hobo Square Dance beginning at 7 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 12, at Oak Heights School Gym, on the corner of 6th Avenue and Elm Street.

Hobo stew will be served at 7 p.m., followed by the Plus at 7:30 and the main square dance from 8 to 10.

Square dance caller will be Jim Voll, with Jackie Gale cueing round dances. A donation of $5 for adults, and $4 for youths is requested, and additional donations for the dinner are appreciated.

Apple Cider Day at orchard Oct. 12

The Antique Apple Orchard, at 28095 Highway 20, just west of The Narrows, will hold its annual Apple Cider Day starting at 9 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 12.

Operators say this has been a big year for the apple crop, so they are offering cider, pressed on the premises with the farm’s antique hydraulic press, at $5 per gallon or $3 per half gallon. The event will continue while supplies last, usually in mid-afternoon.

Fresh apples will not be sold this year, but dried apples, carmel apples and hot apple cider will be available.

Gardening class on freezing weather

Learn how to handle freezing weather in the garden at a free garden class offered by Oregon State University Extension from 11 a.m. to noon Saturday, Oct. 12, at Hoy’s Hardware and Garden Center, 3041 Main St.

The class series, held on the second Saturday of each month, is offered by OSU Master Gardeners. This month’s speaker will be Brenda Winslow.

The Nov. 9 class will focus on mason bee cleaning. It is limited to 15 people, so reservations will be required. Sign up at the website below.

Costume and pets walk Saturday

Build Lebanon Trails will hold a Paws on the Pavement and Kids Costume Walk from 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 12.

Have a pooch or a kiddo that needs to burn off some energy? This free event includes obstacles/agility challenges for the dogs and a kids costume walk, with prizes for costumed pets and their companions. All ages are welcome.

Dogs must be on leash and companions should be prepared to pick up after their dogs, if necessary.

Meet at the Marks Slough parking lot off Tennessee Road across from the Waste Water Treatment Plant. From the intersection of Main Street and Wheeler Street travel east approximately .8 mile on Wheeler Street.

Mennonite festival

at Expo Center

The Oregon Mennonite Festival for World Relief will hold its 36th annual event from 7:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 12, at the Linn County Fair and Expo Center in Albany.

The community fair raises funds to meet needs through the global ministries of the Mennonite Central Committee. Last year’s festival raised more than $100,000 for worthy projects around the world. The event features a live auction, great food, quality shops, handmade quilts, children’s activities, music, and more.

‘Talking Books’

vision group topic

“Talking Books”  will be the subject of the monthly meeting of the Mid Valley Low Vision support Group, at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 16, at the Brookdale Grand Prairie, 1929 Grand Prairie Road, Albany.

Elka Burton, Oregon representative for Talking Books, will present a comprehensive and informative description of the federally funded program for blind, low-vision and handicapped people.

The program is distributed and managed by the Oregon Commission for the Blind. It is free to use, along with the special electronic equipment that each recipient of the program receives.

There are over 15,000 books in all categories, narrated by professional speakers and delivered through the U.S. Postal Service.  No one must leave their house in order to listen to their selected books.

The Mid Valley Low Vision Support Group is a non-profit, self supporting organization which is free to attend.  Refreshments will be provided.

Medicare class at Lebanon LBCC

A Medicare class that will cover the basics of Medicare parts A, B, C, and D will be offered from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 16, at Linn-Benton Community College Lebanon, Room LC-153, 44 Industrial Way, Lebanon.

The free class is designed for anyone who will be eligible for Medicare within a few months or is new to Medicare. Current beneficiaries who would like a better understanding of their Medicare benefits and options will also find this class valuable. Spouses and other relatives are welcome to attend.

A SHIBA counselor will present the class, which is sponsored by the Retired & Senior Volunteer Program  (RSVP) of the Oregon Cascades West Council of Governments.

Meals on Wheels

Meals on Wheels offers lunch at the Sweet Home Community Center to seniors over 60 at noon on Mondays, Tuesdays and Fridays.

The Senior Center serves a separate lunch on Wednesdays.

Suggested donation is $3.50. All meals are served with milk, coffee or tea upon request and diabetic desserts are available on request.

The menu on Friday, Oct. 11, is garden chicken or chef mini salad over spinach romaine, green split pea soup, whole wheat roll and golden fruit cup.

The menu on Monday, Oct. 14, is ground beef and pasta or chicken divan bake, herbed carrots, spinach romaine salad, herb roll and vanilla pudding.

The menu on Tuesday, Oct. 15, is chicken or egg salad sandwich half on wheat bread, minestrone soup, carrot coleslaw and pears.
