Christmas Tree
choir forming
The Sweet Home Singing Christmas Tree has begun rehearsing for its 2019 holiday program.
Rehearsals are from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesdays in the choir room of Sweet Home High School, 1641 Long St.
Those who wish to join the choir merely need to attend rehearsals to register. Singers ages 12 and older are welcome to join. It is asked that participants have very regular attendance at rehearsals.
There are no dues or fees for singers, nor do singers need to audition to become a part of the choir. Members come from Lebanon and Albany, as well as Sweet Home.
This year’s performances will be held Dec. 6-8 in the newly refurbished high school auditorium.
The Singing Christmas Tree presents a variety of holiday songs from sacred to the carols and secular songs which we have all learned from childhood. The theme of the 2019 program is “Tinsel, Snow and Tradition.”
The choir performs on a tree- shaped choral riser covered in live fir boughs that truly looks like a living Christmas tree. Strings of red, blue, green, and amber Christmas lights move in time with the music being performed creating a wonderful visual experience.
John Kluttz will direct the Singing Christmas Tree choir. This will be his second year at the helm, though he is an alumnus of the choir, having sung when he was in high school.

OSU veterinary
center open house
The Carlson College of Veterinary Medicine at Oregon State University will host a grand opening and ribbon “chewing” ceremony Monday, Sept. 23, to celebrate the expansion of the veterinary teaching and clinical facilities.
The event will be held from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. at Magruder Hall, 700 SW 30th St., Corvallis.
A brief ceremony and remarks will be followed by refreshments and tours of the new facilities. The public is welcome to attend.
The 21,729-square-foot expansion of Magruder Hall, the home of the university’s veterinary school, includes additional instruction space and will allow for increased services at the small animal hospital.
The small animal hospital has treated more than 20,000 animals, primarily cats and dogs, since its opening in 2006. Over the past five years, the hospital’s case load has increased an average of 9.1 percent annually.
The expansion includes a new wing for the Lois Bates Acheson Teaching Hospital and a remodeled entrance and reception area for the small animal hospital. The new wing includes six exam rooms, more than doubling the current exam space, and offices for hospital doctors and residents. The new wing will house oncology, cardiology, and internal medicine, freeing up space for the surgery service to expand. The expanded reception area also includes triage and comfort rooms.
The lecture hall will help serve the growing veterinary student population; enrollment was increased from 56 students to 72 students per class over the last few years.

Blood drives to
be held locally
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints will host a blood drive for the Red Cross from 1 to 6 p.m. Friday, Sept. 27, at 1155 22nd Ave.
Other blood donation events will be held in Lebanon from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 28, at Safeway, 1983 S Main St .; and Monday, Sept. 30, at both the Oregon Veterans Home, 600 North 5th St .; and Lebanon Community Hospital, 525 N Santiam Hwy.
According to the Red Cross, Hurricane Dorian has forced the closure of blood donation centers and the cancellation of blood drives in its path, causing blood and platelet donations to go uncollected. When blood donations are disrupted in a region of the country, the Red Cross is able to move blood donations where they are needed most.
