‘Life Stories’ class starts Sept. 27

Linn-Benton Community College is offering the class “Life Stories,” in which students can preserve their family stories.

Recall and recount family history in your own narrative style with enhancement of detail, description and dialogue. Get tips on publishing to submit stories to magazines as fact or fiction.

The eight-week class will start Wednesdays, Sept. 27, from 2-3:50 p.m. at the LBCC Lebanon Center, 44 Industrial Way. Cost is $69. Classes are also offered in Albany and Corvallis on other days.

Pro-life observance Sunday at PCC

Respect Life Sunday will be held Sunday, Oct. 1, in Sweet Home.

Local churches and pro-life organizations will participate in a National Life Prayer Chain, a peaceful one-hour prayer vigil that is one of the largest pro-life demonstrations in the world.

Participants are expected in more than 1,500 cities across the U.S. and Canada.

Sweet Home’s observance will last from 2 to 3 p.m. at the Sweet Home Pregnancy Resource Center, 1344 Main St.

Bring a chair to sit in if needed. Tasteful signs will be provided. Refreshments will follow at the St. Helen’s Catholic Church Parish Hall at 815 5th Ave.

SHPD Citizen’s Academy starting

Sweet Home residents are invited to join Citizen’s Police Academy for six weeks from 6 to 9 p.m. on Tuesdays, starting Oct. 3 in the training room at the Sweet Home Police Department, 1950 Main St.

Paticipants get an insider’s look into the Police Department and the criminal justice system. Hear directly from police officers and other staff members.

Beginner ceramics class at LBCC

A beginning ceramics class will be held through the Linn-Benton Community College Sweet Home Center starting Sept. 28.

Learn foundational skills for working with clay in the introductory class for the absolute beginner, using various hand-building techniques. All materials and tools are included.

The nine-week class meets Thursdays from 6 to 7:50 p.m., starting Sept. 28 at Sweet Home High School, 1641 Long St.

Cost is $80.

Veterans job fair Oct. 3 in Albany

A Veterans Career and Resource Fair will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 3, at the Boys & Girls Club of Albany, 1215 Hill St. SE.

The event will include information about career opportunities and organizations that can provide resources for veterans, and chances to engage with employers.

Careers expo for teens Sept. 29

The Boys & Girls Club will hold its East Linn County Classroom to Careers Expo Friday, Sept. 29, at the Santiam Travel Depot, 750 S 3rd St., Lebanon.

The purpose of the free event is to provide Lebanon and Sweet Home middle and high school students with hands-on exposure to important local industries such as construction, trucking, railroad, domestic and heavy construction, machine operation, manufacturing, and more.

More than 30 exhibits are being planned, including five virtual reality simulators, and opportunities to get real experience operating heavy equipment, welders, and more.

A list of exhibits and participating industries and organizations is posted at http://www.bgcgreatersantiam.org. The public is welcome to visit from 3 to 6 p.m.

Meals on Wheels weekly menu

Meals on Wheels, also known as Your Table or Ours, offers lunch at the Sweet Home Community Center to seniors over 60 at noon on Mondays, Tuesdays and Fridays.

The Senior Center serves a separate lunch on Wednesdays.

First-time diners are invited to come in and have a free lunch to give it a try.

Suggested donation is $3.50. All meals are served with milk, coffee or tea upon request and diabetic desserts are available on request.

The menu on Friday, Sept. 29, is Oktoberfest rotisserie chicken or German meatballs, garlic whipped potatoes, red cabbage and apples, rye bread and German chocolate cake.

The menu on Monday, Oct. 2, is beef tamale pot pie with cornmeal dumpling or chicken pastina with dinner roll, cut green beans, pineapple slaw and s’mores chocolate pudding.

The menu on Tuesday, Oct. 3, is hearty turkey stew or western beef goulash, lima beans, garden vegetable salad, onion roll and chocolate chip bar.

Volunteers are needed for both kitchen help and meal delivery.
