Free kids health screening Thursday

Children who might be in need of specialized care at a Shriners hospital can receive a free screening at a Samaritan Health Services pediatric clinic Thursday, Oct. 1, from 9 a.m. to noon, at Mid-Valley Pediatrics, 675 N. 5th St. in Lebanon

The Linn and Benton County Shrine clubs will co-host the screenings, with the goal of screening kids up to 18 years of age with orthopedic conditions, burns or scars. Samaritan-affiliated pediatricians will conduct the screenings and determine if the child should be seen at the Shriners Hospital for Children in Portland where they would be eligible to receive treatment at no charge.

In addition, members of the Shrine clubs and local Masonic lodges will offer child identification packets to parents. These packets will consist of pictures and fingerprints, which will be taken on-site. Parents will be able to take their child’s identification packet home with them at the end of the screening.

Snacks will be provided for children while they wait to see a physician.

Free well water

screening Saturday

Oregon State University Extension Service is offering a free opportunity to have well water screened for nitrate from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 3, at the Albany Farmers Market, on the corner of 4th & Ellsworth.

A portion of the southern Willamette Valley has been designated as a Groundwater Management Area by the Department of Environmental Quality due to ele-vated nitrate levels in well water. While it is especially important for households with pregnant women or newborns to test for nitrate because of a rare type of blue-baby syndrome, all homes with private wells should be aware of their nitrate level.

For a free nitrate screening, bring half a cup of untreated well water in a clean, water-tight container. The test takes 5 to 10 minutes if the well water clinic is not busy, and participants who don’t want to wait can leave contact information for the results to be delivered after the clinic date.

A water quality educator will be available during clinic times to answer questions about well water and septic tank issues. For additional information on well water and septic systems, free Rural Living Basics classes and other nitrate screening events, visit wellwater.oregonstate.edu or call (541) 766-3556.
