The Huskies lost at home to Siuslaw 60-31 Dec. 19 and South Umpqua 45-24 Dec. 20.
South Umpqua established a strong lead out of the gate, 9-2 after a quarter, and held on to lead 20-11 at halftime. South Umpqua stretched its lead to 32-17 by the end of the third quarter.
The Huskies had a hard time holding onto the ball against South Umpqua, which accrued some 30 steals.
“They acted like they were tired to a certain extent,” said Coach Dave McNeil.
The Huskies fared better longer against Siuslaw, playing about 3½ quarters, McNeil said. Makayla Towry, Hailey Silver, Alana Silver, April Underwood and Kayla Miller started showing a connection among themselves, cooperating on offense and defense and challenging their opponent during a majority of the game. They were a little slow heading into the third quarter, but the girls brought it back before Siuslaw ran away with it in the fourth.
The team is playing good defense, McNeil said. “The big thing for us remains our offense.”
The Huskies play next against Tillamook at a tournament in Stayton, held Wednesday through Friday. Game time is 3 p.m. Tillamook is 1-3, with losses to North Marion, Stayton and Newport and a win against Taft.
