Banner display commemorates local heroes

The City of Brownsville and Travis Moothart American Legion Post #184 are working on a project to honor veterans with banners along city streets.

The city hung the first banners to be displayed, just in time for Veterans Day.

One of the Brownsville City Council goals is to honor hometown heroes, so they partnered with the Legion for selection of service men and women to highlight, City Administrator Scott McDowell said.

“It was decided to work on posthumous members first,” he said. “There will be ten banners in this initial phase.”

The city will then begin bringing honor to living service members with their own banners, which will be on a rotation schedule for certain holidays, such as Memorial Day, Fourth of July and Veterans Day.

The first 10 veterans to be honored through the new banner program are Fred Anderson, Ray Baughman, Brad Boles, Steve Chambers, Marty Cross, Dick May, Mike McDaniel, Travis Moothart, Donny Nealon and Fred Wellhouser.
