Baseball ends in contest with alumni

The summer high school baseball team finished its season with a tournament at Newport earlier this month and a contest with alumni on July 11.

At Newport, “we got throttled,” Coach Dan Tow said. “We went over there with a bunch of freshmen. All the teams over there were varsity teams.”

But it was a good experience for the young players, Coach Tow said. They competed well at times and were tough through three games.

They played the following Thursday against recent graduates of Sweet Home High School.

“That was a lot of fun,” Coach Tow said. It also drew one of the larger crowds of the summer season.

The teams played nine innings with coaches Tow and Jon Cohrs at umpire. The game went till a little after 11 p.m.

Facing the high school team were Husky graduates Charlie Pace, B.J. Emmert, Matt Matuszak and more. Pace pitches for Western Baptist Bible College.

Coach Tow didn’t have an exact score but said the older team won 13 or 14 to 8.

“It was a lot of fun,” Coach Tow said. “The kids had fun. It was a good time.”

Over the summer, the high school team played about 20 games against a variety of teams, some better than the Huskies and others not as good.

Coach Tow was pleased with the younger players this year.

“We have a few questions” about next season, Coach Tow said. The team will return several varsity players, “and there will be some of the JV kids and freshman kids filling in varsity spots in my opinion.”
