Baseball: OWC leader Stayton beats Huskies twice on diamond

Sweet Home faced a Stayton team that is undefeated in the Oregon West Conference on back-to-back days last week and came out on the losing end, falling to the Eagles 11-1 on the road on Wednesday and 16-1 at home on Thursday.

In the first game, which was called after 4.5 innings due to the 10-run rule, Stayton (12-4, No. 6) outhit Sweet Home 8-3, and the Huskies committed two errors to the Eagles’ one.

Kaden Zajic started on the mound for the Huskies, pitching one and a third innings and allowing three earned runs on no hits and three walks.

Coming in relief, Kelso Ellis never recorded an out, giving up two earned runs on four hits.

Dylan Luttmer pitched 1 2/3 innings, giving up three earned runs on three hits while walking two and striking out one. Kayden Gutierrez pitched one inning, giving up one earned run on one hit while walking three and striking out one.

Casey Valloni, Trenton Smith, and Luttmer each had a single in the game.

The next day, the game was called after five innings as Stayton commanded the field in a convincing 16-1 victory. The Eagles outhit the Huskies 6-3, and Sweet Home committed seven errors to Stayton’s one.

Christian Dominy started on the mound for Sweet Home, pitching one and one third innings and giving up four earned runs on two hits while walking eight. In relief, Ellis pitched two and two third innings, giving up four earned runs on three hits while walking four and striking out two. Gutierrez pitched one inning, giving up one earned run on one hit while walking three.

Jake Sieminski, Gutierrez and Ellis each had a single in the game.

On Monday, May 5, the Huskies lost at home against Cascade 9-0. Stats were not available by press time.

This week the Huskies (0-16) take on Cascade (5-13) on the road at 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday, May 3. They then host the Cougars Thursday at 4:30 p.m. Sweet Home plays at Newport (11-7) at 5 p.m. on Monday, May 8.
