Baseball team downs Westside Christian

Sweet Home 10,

Westside Christian 4

The Huskies split a pair of baseball games in the Grant-Union Tournament held on March 23. They would have played for third place in the tournament, but the final game was snowed out.

They opened the tournament with a 10-4 victory over Westside Christian.

“Gavin Kauffman gave us a quality start, and Levi Marchbanks threw very well in relief, two innings,” Coach Dan Tow said. “We hit the ball very well as a team, with 13 hits, including five doubles. We also had seven stolen bases, which was a great job of base running, I thought.”

The Huskies played excellent team defense, Tow said, and they turned two double plays on the day.

“That was a big part of our success,” he said.

At bat, Leif Erickson went 3-5 with a double, one RBI and three runs. J.P. Williams went 2-3 with a double and three RBI. Andrew Winslow went 2-4 with a double. Steven Bidwell went 2-4 with two runs. Brock Cota and Kauffman both had doubles.

Chris Mueller led Westside hitting with a double. Austin Layton was losing pitcher.

St. Helens 6, Sweet Home 2

The Huskies had a shot at beating 5A St. Helens, Tow said, but the Lions were good and pulled out a 6-2 win on the strength of five runs in the fifth inning.

“We really played pretty well today and hit the ball fairly well against a pretty good ball club,” Tow said. “Unfortunately, we couldn’t get the big hit, and the got one or two big ones. I thought T.J. Sipe gave us a good start on the mound. Levi was great in relief again, and Steven Bidwell played a nice game offensively and defensively.”

On defense, Tow said, “we had two times during the game where we picked runners off of bases. We also had a great throw from outfield to get a guy at second base.”

At bat, Bidwell went 2-4 with two runs. Williams went 2-4 with a double and an RBI. Jamie Steinbacher, Kauffman, Erickson and Marchbanks all singled.

Welter hit a two-run homer un to lead St. Helens at bat. Webster was the starting pitcher for St. Helens. Underwood was winning pitcher.
