Baseball team goes down fighting in league playoffs, loses by a hair to Cascade Cougars

Sweet Home 8, Molalla 4

The Husky baseball team won the first round of league playoffs 8-4 against Molalla on May 18 at Cascade High School.

“Our kids really came to play,” Coach Dan Tow said. “We’ve had a tough year; but this was a game that could have ended our season, and they were determined to play a little longer.

“We got a great outing on the mound from Kyle Pettit, and he helped himself with the bat as well. Our kids stole a few bases and did a nice job of executing offensively, which allowed us to score some of those later runs and helped put the game out of reach for Molalla.

“Other than two errors in the first inning, our defense was flawless the rest of the game.

“I was really proud of our kids’ approach today, and it paid off with a victory and a chance to play Cascade for the right to advance to state playoffs.”

At bat, Pettit went 2-4 with a double and two RBIs. Adam Hummer went 2-4 with an RBI. Brett Miller went 1-2. Adam Matuszak and Skyler Bascom went 1-3, and Chaz Davis went 1-4.

Cascade 6, Sweet Home 5

The Huskies ended their season with a bang, taking Cascade to eight innings and nearly winning the chance to move on to state playoffs.

Cascade scored a run in the eighth inning to win it 6-5.

“We just crushed the ball,” Tow said. “Our defense was great, and Adam Hummer gave us a great effort on the mound. The home run was a big hit for them, and they turned several double plays, which really helped them limit our run production.

“Our defense was oustanding. We made numerous great plays and did not commit an error.”

“The game went into extra innings and was just a great battle by two teams that didn’t want to lose. I couldn’t be more proud of our kids and they way they played today.”

At bat, Greg Sipe went 3-3 with an RBI. Pettit went 2-3 with an RBI. Trevor Tagle went 3-4 with an RBI. Hummer went 2-4 with a double, and Joe Ellis went 2-4. Matuszak went 1-2 with a double. Davis went 1-2, and Bascom went 1-4 with two RBIs.

Cascade pitcher Jarrod Kamstra hit a three-run homerun.
