Baseball team names Brad Valloni MVP

The Huskies baseball team named senior Brad Valloni Most Valuable Player during the team’s annual awards dessert held June 10.

Valloni also received second-team all-league infield honors and the team’s Big Stick hitting award, which is determined by statistics.

Gavin Kauffman, a sophomore, was named the team’s Pitcher of the Year, and he received the Golden Glove award for fielding. Both awards are based on statistics. He also received the Rookie of the Year Award and was a member of the Huskies’ 100 Club for not missing a single practice or game throughout the spring season. He was second-team all-league pitcher.

J.P. Williams, a junior, also received the Big Stick award and was named first-team all-league infield.

Andrew Winslow, a junior, received the team’s Best Hustler award and Most Improved. He also was a member of the 100 Club.

T.J. Sipe, a junior, also received the Most Improved Award and was a member of the 100 Club.

Jamie Steinbacher, a junior, was named a member of the 100 Club.

Other all-league awards included junior Brock Cota, second-team at first base; junior Levi Marbanks, honorable mention at catcher; and senior Leif Erickson, honorable mention in the outfield.

First-year letters went to senior Tyler White; juniors Jamie Steinbacher, T.J. Sipe, and Andrew Winslow; and sophomore Gavin Kauffman.

Receiving second-year letters were senior Leif Erickson and juniors J.P. Williams, Brock Cota, Tyler Holly, Levi Marchbanks and Steven Bidwell.

Valloni received his third letter in baseball.

The team opened its summer schedule with a tournament in south Salem, Coach Dan Tow said. It was a rough opening, with four losses. The team hasn’t been playing since the end of its foray into state playoffs in May, while other teams have had about two weeks to practice.

Assistant coaches Josh Marvin and Matt Matuszak are handling the bulk of summer coaching duties, Tow said, while Tow is busy with his own children this year.

The team plays next at home at 6 p.m. on Wednesday against Molalla.
