Baseball team splits with Sisters, loses big lead to Taft

Sisters 5, Sweet Home 3

The Huskies baseball team split a doubleheader at Sisters on Saturday, losing the first game 5-3.

“I thought Levi (Marchbanks) pitched well, and we played good defense behind him,” Coach Dan Tow said.

“It was just a good ball game, and we came up a little short. We hit the ball fairly well up and down the lineup.

“Defensively, this was a pretty good game by both teams. We only had one bobbled ball all day.”

At bat, Steven Bidwell went 2-4. Gavin Kauffman went 1-2 with an RBI. Tyler White went 1-2 with a single. J.P. Williams, Marchbanks and Leif Erickson each went 1-3, and Brad Valloni and Tyler Holly went 1-4.

Kleiput was the winning pitcher.

Sweet Home 10, Sisters 6

A pair of big innings helped the Huskies over the top with Sisters, winning 10-6 in the second game.

“We had a couple of big innings in this one and did a nice job of scoring runs,” Tow said. “Levi had a big day with the bat, and we had a lot of output up and down the lineup.

“The kids did a good job in the third and seventh of putting a bunch of runs on the board. All in all, this was a good day against a pretty good Sisters club.

“We had another good game defensively. Other than two errors in the last inning, we made every play.”

At bat, Marchbanks went 3-4 with a double and two RBI. Williams and Valloni were both 1-2. Kauffman went 1-3 with an RBI. T.J. Sipe went 1-4 with two RBI, and Holly added a single.

Taft 10, Sweet Home 9

The Huskies lost a 9-2 lead at Taft on Thursday, giving up that strong lead for a 10-9 loss.

“We really lost a tough one in this game,” Tow said. “We jumped to an early lead, but they rallies late in the game, and their big fifth inning really hurt us. Our kids competed hard, but in the end, we lost a tough one. Defensively, we really played a pretty decent game.”

Kauffman was starting pitcher and received credit for the loss. Marchbanks and Sipe pitched in relief. Winning pitcher was Ehrenfelt. Starting Taft pitcher was Wilkinson.

At bat, Bidwell went 3-5. Williams went 2-4 with a double and an RBI. Valloni went 2-4 with a home run and four RBI.

Sweet Home 9, Philomath 4

The Huskies built an early lead at home against Philomath on April 7 to get a 9-4 league victory.

Sweet Home led 4-0 after three innings, but Philomath managed to tie the game with two runs each in the fifth and sixth. The Huskies answered with an explosive offense in the bottom of the fifth to win it.

“Williams had a great start for us on the mound, and we really hit the ball well,” Tow said. “Vallonie had a big night with the bat, and so did numerous others. Tyler Holly had a big hit with two RBI, and Gavin Kauffman’s triple in the sixth was huge.

“With the game tied, Kauffman tripled and then scored on Jamie Steinbacher’s ground ball to second base. We added four more runs in the bottom of sixth, and Gavin came in and closed it out in the seventh.

“Defensively, we played outstanding tonight. We didn’t commit an error, and Tyler Holly especially had a great night,” Tow said.

At bat, Valloni went 3-4 with a double, home run and two RBI. Kauffman went 2-3 with a triple and an RBI. Williams went 2-4 with two RBI. Holly went 1-3 with a double and two RBI. Brock Cota, Marchbanks Andrew Winslow and Bidwell all singled.

Pitching in relief, Marchbanks was credited with the win. Dan Haynes was losing pitcher.
