Sweet Home High School’s All Years Alumni Reunion will begin at 10 a.m. Saturday, July 14, and continue throughout the day.
Organizers are expecting some 2,000 alumni for the event, “Once Upon a Time at Sweet Home High – 100 Years of Memories (1912-2012), which marks the 100th year of the building of Sweet Home Union High School, in 1912. The reunion is being put on by the Sweet Home Alumni Foundation.
“We just want to raise awareness,” said foundation member Coreen Melcher. “We want them to know about the Sweet Home Alumni Foundation and what we’re all about – helping kids from Sweet Home High School further their education.
“I don’t think kids in Sweet Home have the same opportunities as kids in big towns with big corporations. It takes people on their feet with their hearts to make things happen for our kids in Sweet Home. To me, that’s what was behind all this when Jim Riggs and others pulled this thing together.”
The reunion, which will run from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the high school, will include self-guided tours, a quilt show, a classic car display, an art show and a Memory Lane exhibit of Husky memorabilia from throughout the 100 years of the high school – yearbooks, newspapers, photos, letterman gear and more.
A program that will include performers from classes of the 1950s, local country singer and alumnus Tristan Nichols, recognition of various alumni, performances by the 2012 state championship cheer squad and former Huskiette dance team members, and more will be held at 5:30 p.m. at Husky Field.
A social featuring music by Royce and Keith Cantrell will be held from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Weddle Bridge, followed by a dance/social at 9 p.m. at the Elks Lodge featuring the Valley Boys, a popular area band.
“We’re not considering this a fund-raiser,” Melcher said. “We’re just considering it a celebration of Sweet Home High School’s history and a chance for the alumni to see the upgrades made to the high school, and to welcome them home.”
