Sherrie Sprenger
My nearly 13 years in the legislature will be wrapping up in the next couple weeks. This will be my last submission as your state representative.
I find it very fitting to spend the next 400, or so, words talking about you, not me.
By far, the best part of this job has been all the people I have met. I think of the many relationships I’ve built over the years with people who, under different circumstances, our paths likely would have never crossed. I think of the people who have invited me into some of the most personal parts of their lives.
I will never forget the young father of two. In 2008 I knocked on his door while campaigning. Little did I know the father would invite me into his home and into his very real pain of fighting a terminal cancer diagnosis. His No. 1 concern was his wife and children. His other concern was how he was going to pay for all the medications that were extending his life.
I worked with this gentleman for a week or so in an attempt to get the cost of his medications covered.
I have had lengthy conversations on many a front porch about politics, mutual acquaintances from many years prior, how tough parenting can be, and how amazing parenting can be. These conversations took place in the rain, scorching heat, even snow.
One evening in 2008, my son, who was 10 at the time, and I spent an hour standing on a porch in Detroit in the freezing cold with snow falling. I remember that evening like it was yesterday, probably because my son was so extraordinarily patient with me.
I’ve even had a constituent attach a picture of his colon to an email he sent me, asking for help. I doubt I’ll ever forget that either!
As a result of contacts made in the course of my work, my family and I have lifelong friendships that make our lives richer. It never crossed my mind that being a legislator would be so rewarding in this way. We’ve spent holidays together, shared significant life events, and unfortunately, we’ve grieved the loss of a special person together.
Be assured you, my constituents, have influenced me in so many ways. You’ve taught me even after I find “the rest of the story” there are still pieces I don’t know.
I never anticipated so many of you would have my back, even though I have the title “politician.”
You have listened to my explanation when I haven’t voted the way you thought I should and then you accepted my vote and we moved on as friends.
I am so pleased I have the privilege to continue representing most of you as one of your Linn County commissioners. I’m also incredibly blessed for all you have taught me as your state representative.
