Blaze destroys old mill building in Lebanon

Fire destroyed a building on the old Champion Mill site in Lebanon, in the area of Highway 20 and Market Street Thursday night, Sept. 21.

Lebanon firefighters responded to the fire at 10:49 p.m. on Sept. 21.

Initial responding units reported a fire on the third floor and through the roof of a 75-by-300-foot three-story structure that was being dismantled.

Work crews had been cutting metal on the roof earlier in the day.

Fire crews took defensive positions due to the condition of the structure and protected nearby structures that were exposed to the fire, according to Lebanon Fire District officials. Crews were initially hampered by a lack of water supply at the site.

The fire was upgraded to a second alarm at 11:06 a.m. and a third alarm at 11:33 p.m.

Eight engines, two trucks, one rescue unit, two medic units and three chief officers along with 40 personnel responded, including units from Lebanon, Albany, Sweet Home, Brownsville, Scio, Halsey and Stayton.
