She was born Oct. 25, 1935 in San Diego, Calif. to Gwendolyn (Fowlkes) and Samuel J. Rice Jr.
She lived in Medford while growing up and attended high school there. She lived in Bakersfield, Calif., where she raised a family, before moving to Oregon where she, her mother and sister bought The Mountain House in Cascadia.
