Taylor Webb, left, and Kelli Fanning were Sweet Home’s nominees for the 2011 Boys and Girls Club Youth of the Year for the Boys and Girls Clubs of the Greater Santiam. Tanea Kirby and Hannah Silverman were Lebanon’s nominees. Kirby was named Youth of the Year March 1 at an event held at The River Center in Lebanon. About 75 members of the community and families attended. Kirby will receive a $500 Jim and Heather McDaniel scholarship. Nominees must be a member of the Boys and Girls Club for at least two years and currently involved in the club. The nominees wrote two essays about the importance of the club in their lives and their plans for post-high school education. They participated in interviews with community leaders and gave speeches about their personal history with the club. The judges selected to monitor the competition were Joel Keesecker of Unified Insurance in Sweet Home; Erin Regrutto, Oregon Jamboree festival director; Wendi Melcher of Heritage NW Real Estate; and Jeff King of RKI Insurance.
