Boys finish basketball season with win, then losses to top teams

Sweet Home boys basketball finished the season 7-6, going .500 in league play with a 3-3 record. They finished fourth in the 4A-3 Oregon West Conference, behind Cascade, Woodburn and Philomath.

The season’s final week started out memorably for the Huskies, with senior Cole Baxter connecting on a game-winning three-pointer with a few seconds left to beat Newport 72-70 at home. Hunter Coulter scored 22, Aiden Tyler scored 18, and Owen Towry finished with 13 for the Huskies.

But any playoff hopes for Sweet Home were dashed after the team finished the season with two road losses against tough conference opponents.

Sweet Home was no match for Cascade on Wednesday, with the Cougars coasting to a 54-35 win. Coulter scored 15, and Tyler and Baxter each had six in the losing effort.

The game at Philomath Friday night was tighter, but Sweet Home again could not prevail, falling to the Warriors 69-59.

Coulter scored 15, Tyler put in 13, and Baxter connected for 11 in the season finale.
