Sweet Home defeated Crook County 56-38 Friday evening at home in varsity boys basketball.
“It was a good win for us,” said Coach Drew Emmert. “We played really well. Defensively, we played a lot better. (Crook County) played pretty hard, but overall, we just kept the lead going. We had a really good third quarter.”
That defense held the Cowboys to two points in the third quarter.
The Huskies held a narrow lead, 17-16, after a fairly even start.
Sweet Home dropped into a zone defense in the second quarter to slow down Cowboys’ scoring, Emmert said. Crook County kept taking quick shots.
The adjustment changed the pacing, and the Huskies pulled ahead 31-23 by halftime. After the third quarter, the hosts held a 39-25 lead.
Sweet Home shot 48.8 percent from the field, while Crook County shot just 24.5 percent. From the foul line, the Huskies were 11-20. The Cowboys were 6-10.
The Huskies collected 39 rebounds, 31 defensive and eight offensive. Crook County had 28, 17 defensive and 11 offensive.
Crook County stole the ball 11 times and turned over the ball 12 times, while Sweet Home had seven steals and 15 turnovers.
Daniel Virtue and Justin Carpenter led Huskies scoring with 12 points each. Keanu Aiona added 7; Keegan Holly, 6; Colton Smith, 5; Hayden Nichol, 4; Jake Swanson, 4; Casie Tow, 4; Alonso Perez, 2.
Friday, the Huskies travel to Sisters, ranked fourth in OSAA rankings, for their opening league game.
