Boys, girls lose in soccer

The boys soccer team lost 3-2 Monday to Newport, but it was close.

“It was a hard-fought game, pretty even,” said Coach Karl Schmidtman. “The last four minutes were pretty intense. We had two shots in the last four minutes.”

Newport scored 15 minutes into the first half on a cross that got kicked around in front of the goal before a Newport player got a clear shot. The Cubs scored twice more to take a 3-0 lead on “tough plays that normally go our way, but didn’t this time.”

But, Schmidtman said, the Huskies didn’t give up.

“We continued to play,” Schmidtman said.

Dakotah Keys scored on a penalty kick with about eight minutes left in the second half, then KC Hanscom connected with Keys on a corner kick for a second goal that Keys headed in.

The Huskies play at Central on Thursday and then host Philomath Monday, Oct. 16.

Girls Soccer

The girls lost two games on the road, 11-0 to Westside Christian on Thursday, and 9-0 to Blanchett on Monday.

In both matches a depleted Sweet Home was playing down two or three players, said Coach Eric Markell.

Against Westside, it was eight on 11 for the first half, then the hosts dropped down to nine players after they established a big lead, he said. After an injury to Sweet Home, it was seven on nine.

The same thing happened against Blanchett, as the Huskies started with eight players against 11.

“I thought we played a good second half, though,” Markell said of his team’s effort.

The girls host Gervais today.
