Sweet Home’s track and field teams won the team competitions Tuesday, April 16, in a three-way meet with Philomath and Woodburn.
The Husky boys scored 212 points, to 177 for Philomath and 173 for Woodburn. The girls finished with Sweet Home 220½ points, ahead of Philomath (193) and Woodburn (96.5).
“It was a good league meet,” Coach Dakotah Keys said. “It was good competition and nice weather.”
It was also another big day individually for the Huskies, who posted 28 personal bests on the boys side and 16 for the girls.
“Everybody was out there competing, trying to earn a spot at the Meet of Champs or trying to earn a berth in the district meet, which is 2½ weeks out, ” Keys said. “The kids tries a bunch of new stuff.”
Individual winners for Sweet Home boys were Noah Dinsfriend in the 110 (16.28) and 300 hurdles (41.85), in which he led a 1-2-3 finish by Sweet Home with Casey Tow (44.16) and Robbie Yunke (47.79). Lance Hanson was the winner in the 100 (12.11, a season’s best) and the triple jump (38-1), and Jake Swanson in the javelin (149-4).
Tristan Calkins in the 200 (23.94, a PR) and led a 1-2-3 Husky finish in the long jump (21-11), ahead of Austin Sills (19-11) and Tow (19-0).
Freshman Eddy Martinez-Maya lead another 1-2-3 finish in the 3000 (10:00.19), ahead of Gavin Walberg (10:18.96) and Tristan Saultz (10:20.78).
For the girls, Kate Hawken won the 100 in a personal-best 13.24 and the 200 (27.37), Hailey Green won the 400 in a personal-best 1:05.82, and Zoe James won the long jump (13-11), which also was a PR for her.
The girls relay teams of Kate Hawken, Torree Hawken, James and Jessy Hart both won, the 4×100 in 52.19 and the 4×400 in 4:20.28.
The boys only competed in the 4×400, Casey Tow, Dinsfriend, Hanson and Calkins combining for a winning 3:33.19.
Keys noted that some other notable PR’s came from Brad Wolthuis in the 100 (12.20), and freshman Vince Drake, who has PR’d every time he’s run the 400. Green,
Jillian Lynn and O’Rian Offut both cleared heights in the high jump, and Sweet Home got a slew of PR’s in the boys throws, most of them from underclassmen.
“Our throws are getting good,” he said. “We’ve actually got some guy throwers in the shot and the disc this yea, when those freshmen came out. They’re still learning. It’ll be good to finally bring some to the district meet.”
He said he’s delighted to have enough athletes to put competitors in every event.
“When I first got here, it was 30 kids. So then it was 60 and now it’s 80. They’re still learning, especially the people in the high jump and the pole vault. Give them like two years and we’ll actually have kids. And other kids will try it.”
He said other good performances came from Green and Vince Drake, both beginners in the 400, who have bettered their times every race this season, and distance runners Madelyn and Sicily Neuschwander, who are making strides in those events.
He particularly noted 800 runners Saultz (2:06.61), Sills (2:07.26) and Walberg (2:09.88).
The last time the Huskies have had three runners who all were running under 2:10 was 2008, when Robby Callagan (1:57.14), Ramiro Santana Jr. (2:05.63) and Brinden Sanders (2:10.27) were running together.
“These guys have good training partners,” Keys said of the current group. “It’s so nice to see. The program’s growing.”
The Huskies will have one last chance to post qualifying marks or times for Meet of Champions on Tuesday, April 23, at Newport, where they will also compete against Stayton.
The Meet of Champions will be Saturday, April 27, at Husky Field. Field events start at 11:30 a.m., with action on the track starting at 1 p.m. (see story on page 1).
