Boys go 2-1 in hoops

Sweet Home lost a nail biter at Stayton, 57-56, in boys basketball Tuesday, May 25.

The Huskies were down 18 in the third quarter but were able to claw their way back to force the contest into overtime.

Head Coach Drew Emmert said they were able to close the deficit against Stayton by utilizing a one-three-one trap and a full court press on defense. Sweet Home forced 24 turnovers in the game.

“We showed a lot of heart to battle back in the second half,” Emmert said.

With 13 seconds left in overtime, Sweet Home was up four points. But the game was tied when a Stayton player completed a four point play after getting fouled on a three pointer.

The Huskies then scored with three seconds left to go up two.

After the bucket, Stayton threw the ball to half court, and a player hit a shot deep in three point territory at the buzzer to win the game, with two Sweet Home defenders contesting.

Hunter Coulter scored 20 and Aiden Tyler scored 16 in the contest.

Sweet Home bounced back against Harrisburg, winning 49-42. They were up 29-18 at halftime and held on despite a late push from Harrisburg.

The Huskies shot 44.4% from the field, compared to 26.5% for Harrisburg.

Hunter Coulter led the team in scoring with 14, and Cole Baxter put in 13 points, with three buckets from beyond the arc. Owen Towry also made three three-pointers to score nine points for the team.

On Friday in yet another road matchup, the Huskies won against Newport 61-53.

They were down 12 points early in the third.

“From there, our guys kicked it into gear and we started playing a lot better defense and forcing some turnovers,” Emmert said.

The Huskies were down two at the start of the fourth quarter, before a steal and a lay in, followed by back to back threes from Tyler.

“That kind of got us going, and we kept the lead from there,” Emmert said.

Coulter scored 19, Tyler scored 16, and Gaskey had 14 in the game.
