Just over halfway through the track season, Sweet Home is getting a clear idea of where it stands in the Val-Co district race after having faced all the league teams except Taft at least twice going into its meet with Central on Tuesday, April 22.
The Huskies got another look at the Panthers on Thursday, April 17, in a three-way meet with Philomath at Central.
The weather was clear but the wind was strong and consistent, blowing into runners’ faces as they headed down the homestretch on the track.
Still, Coach Billy Snow and assistants Jim Kistner and Ramiro Santana Sr. got a chance to try new things and watch the boys team score 68 points for the meet. to 58 for Central and 55 for Philomath.
Winners for the boys were Sam Macklin in the 100, Land Florek in the 400, Rob Callagan in the 800, Dakotah Keys in the 110 high hurdles, the javelin and the high jump, and Marc Callagan in the shot and discus. The boys 4×400 relay team also won and the 4×100 team was barely edged by Central.
The girls placed second to Philomath, with first-place finishes by Maria Kropf in the 100 and long jump, Amanda Basham in the 1500 and Ashley Danielson in the javelin.
The Husky boys showed once again that they have depth and strength in the short sprints, as Macklin and freshman Tim McDowell went 1-2 in the 100 and Keys, Florek and Alex Santana took second through fourth in the 200, which was Keys’ second time in the event since junior high. Ramiro Santana Jr. paired with Rob Callagan for a 1-3 finish in the 800, and Kelsey Fisher took third in the javelin behind Keys to help load the scoring in that event in Sweet Home’s favor.
“It looks like our strengths are in different areas,” Snow said of the three teams. Philomath dominated the distances, with a little overlap from Central, while Central and Sweet Home traded off in the throws and the Panthers dominated much of the jumps scoring.
“I see those three teams beating up on each other (at districts),” Snow said, adding that Newport will be waiting in the wings to pounce if there are any gaps.
“It’s going to come down to who can put people in their best events and who’s on that day (for the district meet).”
Snow said some surprises may still be coming as Central still hasn’t put junior Javier Orozco, one of its best distance runners, on the track this season. Orozco was standing on the sidelines in street clothes Thursday, taking splits, Snow said. Another junior, Joe Deardorff, who was seventh in the district 800 as a sophomore and helped the Panthers defeat Sweet Home at the district cross-country meet last fall, has only high jumped thus far this season.
“I’ve never been in a league where they did it that way,” Snow said of the late appearances.
He said the Huskies still need to fill spots in the hurdles and the jumps, though Keys has proven he can score points in any of those events.
Nikki Smith’s PR of 10-5 in the pole vault offers hope that he might be able to score in that event, Snow said.
He’s also encouraged, he said, by the performance of the 4×400 relay team, which ran the entire race out front on Thursday,
“‘This is our race and we’re going to win it ‘ – that’s the attitude they need,” Snow said.
On the girls side, Philomath’s depth and speed carried the Warriors to 97 points for first place, ahead of the Huskies’ 44 and Central’s 39.
The 1500 was a good event for Sweet Home Thursday, Snow said, as Basham’s 5:10.7 was good for eighth place in Sweet Home’s record book, while freshman Carissa Swanson cut 11 seconds off her best time in the event.
Jessica Snow showed she is beginning to round into form in the 400 with a 68.94, half a second better than her time the week before and three seconds faster than she started the season. She also took third in the triple jump with a leap of 28-1.
Freshman Caroline Amendola took sixth in the pole vault with a leap of 6-6, which was her first series of clearances of the season.
Jill Mahler showed once again that she is a force to be reckoned with in the 800, letting Philomath’s Yessy Alvarado out to a two-second lead early in the race, but never letting Alverado, who went to state in the event last year, widen that gap.
“Jill is pretty solid in the 800,” Billy Snow said. “Yessy opened up that gap, but it never opened up after that. Jill can run with her.”
Danielson had “another solid effort” in the javelin, Snow said, but fell to the track during the girls 4×400 relay and was unable to continue the race. Snow said it was unclear what the problem was but she appeared to be all right.
After hosting Central in their first home meet on Tuesday afternoon, April 22, the Huskies who qualify for the Meet of Champions will compete Saturday at Willamette University in the meet, which draws top athletes from 1A through 4A divisions.
