Boys open basketball league play with loss

Sweet Home boys basketball endured a tough result to start league play in the Oregon West Conference last week, losing 80-25 at Cascade on Jan. 20. The Cougars are ranked No. 3 in the state for 4A.

After going up 23-11 by the end of the first quarter, the Cougars (11-2) outscored their visitors 25-2 in the second. The third quarter was more of the same, as Cascade won that frame 20-4 on the way to the lopsided victory.

Cascade outshot Sweet Home (1-13) 53.3% to 33.3% in the game. Sweet Home turned the ball over 33 times while only forcing 11.

Junior Nathan Aker led the Huskies in scoring with 11 points on 5-12 shooting. Senior Riley Korn had six points on 1-1 shooting from the field, while junior Collin Nicholson had four points on 2-6 shooting.

This week the Huskies host Newport (6-8) at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 24, and then travel to Philomath (12-1) for a 7 p.m. game on Friday, Jan. 27. The Warriors are ranked No. 1 in 4A.
