Boys open soccer season with losses

Tillamook 4, Sweet Home 2

Stayton 5, Sweet Home 2

The boys soccer team lost 4-2 to Tillamook on the road Sept. 2 to open their season.

“We played really well,” Coach Al Grove said. “We played well as a team.”

Tillamook scored a pair of goals early in the first half, but the Huskies were able to come back and tie the game just after halftime with a goal from Brock Crocker assisted by Alex Santana and a goal by Santana assisted by Mitchell Grove.

Tillamook scored twice more to win the game.

Stayton defeated the Huskies 5-2 on Thursday.

“We didn’t play nearly as well,” Grove said. The Huskies had about the same number of shots as they did against Tillamook, about 20.

The Eagles were an easier team to play than Tillamook, Grove said, “but you wouldn’t know it” from the score.

Stayton led 3-0 by halftime. Again, the Huskies mounted a comeback when Santana scored a goal on a penalty kick and then Sweet Home got a second score on a header from Mitchell Grove in the closing minutes of the game.

“We can play with either of these teams,” Grove said. “We’ve got to get some bugs worked out, but that’s what preseason is for.”

Teamwork is one of the Huskies’ strengths early on, Grove said, but “we’ve got to do a better job of communicating.”

The team also is using its speed to its advantage, he said.

This week, the Huskies will host Yamhill-Carlton on Thursday.
