The Sweet Home swim team placed its boys second at the state meet, and all 11 swimmers competing brought hardware home from Mt. Hood Community College on Saturday.
Two freshman boys, Kieran Schaefer and Jayce Calhoon, became state champions, Schaefer a double winner.
Cottage Grove won the first-place boys team trophy with a score of 79.2. Sweet Home was second with 51.5 points, followed by Newport with 32.4.
“Great meet,” said veteran Coach Doug Peargin. “We took 11 swimmers to state, and all 11 of them were in the finals in at least one event each. All 11 brought home a medal.
“If everyone that you take pulls points for the team, that’s as good as it gets. We had one great swim after another. No one folded under the pressure, but instead, everyone rose up for the competition.”
Schaefer was state champion in the 100 and 200 freestyle, finishing 49.4 and 1:49.5 respectively. Calhoon was the state champion in the 500 freestyle, finishing 4:58.6.
“I felt pretty good,” Schaefer said. “My times were pretty good. Those are my best times. It’s going to be a big thing to come back next year and try to hold onto it.”
“It feels pretty good,”Calhoon said of his performance. “I’ve been swimming since I was 4 or 5. My mom coaches me, and that helps.”
Calhoon said he took off “pretty easy,” but the swimmer behind him was gaining on him, threatening his first-place finish. He kicked into his swim a little harder to get the win.
Calhoon was excited to see his buddy Schaefer get wins also.
“I think it’s pretty cool because he’s a good friend,” he said. “We swim side by side in practice. It’s good to see he got first too.”
Three swimmers moved up the ladder in the school record book during the meet, Peargin said. Schaefer’s 1:49.5 in the 200 free was the fourth best time in school history. His 49.4 in the 100 free placed him seventh in school history.
Calhoon’s 4:58.6 performance in the 500 free was the second best in school history.
For the girls, Nichole Martin’s 2:28.2 in the 200 IM earned her the rank of 10th in school history.
Teammates Sarah Rosa, Justine Calhoon, Martin and Jessica Trautwein finished fifth in the 200 medley relay with a time of 2:03.4.
Martin, Alyshia Benzo, Rosa and Trautwein teamed up for a sixth-place finish in the 400 free relay with a time of 4:02.4
Martin finished sixth in the 100 butterfly with a time of 1:06.5.
Rosa finished sixth in the 100 backstroke with a time of 1:08.2.
Calhoon, Michael Simmonds, Brinden Sanders and Cole Stumbough finished third in the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:48.4.
Stumbough finished fourth in the 100 free with a time of 51.8.
Simmonds finished fifth in the 500 free with a time of 5:25.1.
Calhoon also finished third in the 100 back with a time of 57.0.
In the 200 free relay, Sanders, Jonathan Lemar, Stumbough and Schaefer finished fifrth with a 1:35.1.
In the 400 free relay, Sanders, Calhoon, Stumbough and Schaefer finished second with a time of 3:26.7.
