Boys pull out another swim win to finish in the black for season

Sweet Home ended its regular dual-meet swimming season Friday, Feb. 4, with wins from both the boys and girls over Junction City, North Marion and Kennedy, finishing an undefeated string for the girls.

“(Senior) Jamie Seward came up to me at the end of the meet and said, ‘The only meet I’ve ever lost in four years was at state,’” Coach A Jay Bronson said.

The boys finished with a 4-3 dual meet record, “which is amazing, since we only have eight kids,” Bronson said.

The Huskies held Senior Night, honoring 10 departees from the program, Bill Hawken, Jacob Kennedy and Micah Wright for the boys, and from the girls team, Meagan Baham, Malia Hewitt, Autumn Ice, Isabel Sayer, Jamie Seward, Chloe Tyler and Jenna Wolthuis.

Following the meet, they held a reception honoring longtime Coach Doug Peargin, who is coaching his 50th season at Sweet Home, all but one of those years – this one – as head coach.

When they got down to business on the blocks, the Huskies made it clear they’re ready for this week’s district meet, Friday and Saturday at South Albany pool.

“We had a lot of time drops across the board,” Bronson said. “Even our experienced swimmers. We had some great swims.”

Tyler swam a season-best 1:56.41 in the 200 Freestyle, to win that event by 27 seconds.

“That is not going to be her event at district and state,” Bronson said, noting that it was still an excellent time.

Tyler also won the 100 backstroke, while Seward was a double winner for Sweet Home in the 50 and 100 freestyles.

Malia Hewitt wont the 100 Breaststroke and Kirsten Sautel was first in the 100 Backstroke. Sweet Home won all three of the girls relays.

For the boys, RJ Abbott doubled for wins in the 50 and 200 freestyles, and Blake Arthur added a victory in the 200 Individual Medley. Freshman Boden Sayers won the 500 Freestyle in a personal-best 7:57.03, ahead of teammate Shayne Schuster.

“Boden swam a significant time in the 500,” Bronson said. “Shayne did well too.”

“This was a good meet to get us ready for district this week.”

The district meet will be restricted to team members only, due to COVID restrictions, he said. No spectators will be admitted.
