Boys set 4×400 relay record at Meet of Champions

It was, Coach Billy Snow, “probably one of the best track meets we’ve had.”

The Huskies competed Saturday at the Meet of Champions at Willamette University and came away with 18 personal bests in 21 events, as well as a school record in the 4×400 relay.

“Tell me the weather didn’t help,” Snow chuckled. “It was great competition and great weather in a nice facility.”

The meet brought together some of the top athletes from 56 schools in the 1A through 4A divisions and the competitive atmosphere brought out the best for many.

Amanda Basham, who only started running long distance last summer, established herself as one of the top 4A distance runners in the state by blowing away the field in the final lap of the 3000 to win that event and placing third in the 1500 in a tight finish after leading the pack in most of that race. Both times are second in the Sweet Home record book behind distance phenom Jessie Schra.

Sophomore Dakotah Keys won three events, the javelin – in which he threw 186-6 after several weeks of lesser numbers (most in rain and wind). Keys’ 15:15 in the 110 high hurdles put him just 1/100th of a second out of second place in the Sweet Home record book and his 40.42 in the 300 hurdles took him to third place in that event among Sweet Home runners past and present. Keys is the leader in the state 4A division in both the 110 hurdles and the javelin.

“With Dakotah, I’m not only impressed that he won three events, but that he is back in the javelin,” Snow said.

Land Florek moved up to number five all-time in the 200 (23.00) and fourth in the 400 (51.10) in winning the latter event.

Alex Santana finished 13th in the 100 (11.67), only three-hundredths of a second off Keys’ freshman record in that event, an event in which Sam Macklin also PR’d.

Santana anchored the boys 4×100 relay squad to second place (44.76) behind Western Christian (43.97).

The 4×400 relay team of Rob Callagan, Florek, Ramiro Santana and Keys continued to state its case for being the top team in the state, winning a tight race with Scappoose (3:28.78) in 3:28.41, the best mark of the year thus far in the 4A division and breaking a school record of 3:28.7 that had stood since 1976.

Callagan ran 2:00.72 to place fourth in a very competitive 800.

East Linn Christian’s Caleb Goins overpowered the field on the final laps of both the 1500 (4:08.10) and the 3000 (8:58.32) to win those events.

Marc Callagan recorded personal bests in both the shot (45-7 1/2) and the discus (127-0).

For the Sweet Home girls, in addition to Basham’s exploits, freshman Maria Kropf finished second in the 100 meters (12.60) behind defending state champion and senior Jessica Rodolf of Junction City (12.54. Kropf’s mark was second all-time for Sweet Home, Snow noted.

Jill Mahler, in the 800, and Carissa Swanson, in the 1500, both notched personal bests in those events, Snow said.

“We not only had PR’s, we had quality marks in every event,” he said.

The Huskies will be back on the track at 4 p.m. Thursday at home in a six-way meet with Philomath, Marist, Pleasant Hill, McKenzie and Taft.
