The Sweet Home High School boys’ soccer team had an early opportunity to showcase their skills at the annual jamboree event, delivering mixed results with one win, one loss, and one draw, Aug 30.
In their opening match, the team secured a 1-0 victory over Gold Beach, with a goal from Elisha Scofield midway through the game. Scofield capitalized on an assist from Ivan Ogden to put the team ahead.
The second match against Pleasant Hill proved to be a challenge. Despite dominating possession with an estimated 80%, the team was unable to convert their control into goals. A defensive error in the final minute allowed Pleasant Hill to score, resulting in a 1-0 loss.
The final match against Coquille ended in a 1-1 draw. Ogden scored early in the match, but Coquille managed to equalize in the closing moments due to another defensive lapse. The team also faced challenges from the heat, which affected key players later in the game.
The Jamboree highlighted some strong aspects of the team’s play, particularly in the midfield and communication on offense. The coaching staff has identified defensive improvement as a priority moving forward, especially with the absence of experienced defenders lost to injury in the offseason.
The team will focus on tightening their defensive play as they prepare for upcoming matches, first away against Siuslaw/Mapleton Sept. 3, following with a home match against East Linn Christian Academy, Sept. 5, at 6 p.m.
