The work’s paying off for the Sweet Home swim teams, according to coach Doug Peargin, after the Huskies posted 19 personal-best times Friday in a three-way home meet with Marist and Central.
The boys won eight of their events to score 133 points to Marist’s 106, with Central in third at 89 to stay undefeated in dual meets. The girls had no first-place finishes, but finished second in all but one event to take second with 96 points, behind Marist (103) and ahead of Central (75).
“Overall, it was a great meet for the entire team,” Peargin said. “I think we’re starting to gel as a team and it couldn’t be at a better time.”
Sophomore Michael Simmonds and his sister Nichole, a freshman, both had three individual PRs in the meet, while Jayce Calhoon, David Worthen, Faith Helfrich, Sami Webb and Tee Whaley all had two PRs each.
Calhoon, a sophomore, turned in the eighth-fastest 100 butterfly time in school history (57.1).
As of last Monday, the Huskies had 18 practices and three meets left before districts on Feb. 8-9.
“The kids are starting to get excited,” Peargin said. “Some of our swimmers have swum over 300 miles already this season and the rest of the team aren’t far behind them. So when we rest up we should be in better shape than the other 11 teams in our district.”
Sweet Home will be back in action at home Friday against Philomath and Junction City.
