Boys swept in Stayton basketball tournament

Sweet Home’s boys were swept in the Stayton High School Holiday Classic basketball tournament held Dec. 28-30.

“Our first game (Dec. 28), we played Molalla, which was a beatable team,” said Coach Drew Emmert. “We didn’t start out very well and couldn’t catch up.”

The Huskies lost 62-46.

In their second game, Dec. 29, the Huskies faced Newport, a strong team, Emmert said. “We played tough at the end of the game and gave ourselves a chance to win.”

The Huskies lost 63-58.

Against Yamhill-Carlton on Dec. 30, “we just started off the game like we were dead,” Emmert said. “We had no energy.”

But they did put together some good quarters.

The Huskies were down by 16 heading into the fourth quarter, Emmert said. They pressed Yamhill-Carlton and got within eight points before losing 51-42.

Overall, “we’re still doing good things, but we just aren’t finding a way to win,” Emmert said. The team is playing two or three good quarters but not four. Against tough opponents, like Newport, the Huskeis are playing their best basketball.

“The good thing is these are preseason games,” Emmert said. The Huskies just need a few more breaks, but “we’ve got to make our own breaks.

“It would be nice having a few more wins. I still believe we can compete with our league.”

The team is capable, he said. It’s just got to get out and do it.

The Huskies, boys and girls, travel to Crook County on Friday.

They’ll host Stayton on Tuesday.
