It was a “mixed bag” for Sweet Home’s track and field team in a home meet April 19 against Sky-Em Conference rivals Cottage Grove and Elmira.
With several top performers out or limited by sickness or injuries, the Huskies placed third on the boys side and tied with Elmira for second, about five points behind Cottage Grove on the girls.
We say “about” because the computer wasn’t programmed correctly to score the meet and gave all the teams about twice the points they were supposed to have, Coach Billy Snow said.
“We had all kinds of issues with our timing stuff,” he said.
The boys had a good day in the distance events, Nick Hall taking first in the 800 (2:04.40), Daniel Danforth in the 1500 (4:31.27) and freshman Jakob Hiett winning the 3000 (9:53.41). The other two winners for the boys were Scottie Stockman in the pole vault (10-00) and Jake Johnson in the discus (125-4).
On the girls side, Courtney Kent was a double winner in the 100 (13.72) and the 300 hurdles (53.37) while Jade Corliss won the shot (32-11½) and Annie Whitfield the javelin (126-0), and Nicole Rasmussen was first in the 3000 (11:28.14).
Snow said he was particularly impressed by the return of Crystal Crites, who took second in the triple jump with an effort of 29-6 after being cleared by a doctor to compete, practicing a couple of days, and entering her first meet of the season. Crites also high jumped 4-4.
Sweet Home’s athletes will see limited action this week, with some traveling to La Pine Wednesday and others competing Saturday at the Meet of Champions at Willamette University. Snow said he hopes a few athletes might be able to get qualifying marks for the MOC at La Pine.
