Boys tie Central in soccer

The Husky boys soccer team tied Central 3-3 at home on Sept. 25.

“It was a good game,” Coach Karl Schmidtman said. “They jumped ahead on us.”

Central led 3-1 at halftime, he said. Central passed well and has skilled players.

But the Huskies turned on the intensity in the second half, he said. “We were able to win some balls in the air.”

A more aggressive Husky team beat Central 2-1 in the second half to earn the tie.

Dakotah Keys assisted K.C. Hanscam for a goal. Tye Dodge assisted Keys, and Keys assisted Jason Long.

“They outshot us big,” Schmidtman said. “They had 27 shots, lots of shots, and we had nine.”

Most of Central’s shots were high-angle shots from the outside, he said, and goalie Michael Bolduc had 12 saves to protect against a loss.

“He kept us in that game,” Schmidtman said.

On Thursday in Philomath, the Huskies scored the first league goal of the season against Philomath, which is still undefeated in league.

Philomath beat the Huskies 6-1. The last time the Huskies saw Philomath, they lost 5-0.

The Huskies played Philomath evenly for the first 10 minutes with a tie at 1-1, Schmidtman said. Philomath pulled ahead 3-1 by halftime. In the second half, the Huskies were tiring while Philomath was deep with subs.

Mitchell Grove scored the Huskies’ only goal. Matthew Grove assisted him.

“That’s the first goal they’ve given up in league,” Schmidtman said of Philomath.

On Monday, the Huskies hosted third-place Taft, losing 5-2.

Shots on goal were more balanced, 15 for Sweet Home and 21 for Taft.

“They still outshot us,” Schmidtman said. “They had one player that just really stood out. He scored three goals, all in the first half.”

For the Huskies, Keys took a shot, but Taft’s goalie saved it, bouncing it out. Dodge came in to finish the goal and tie the game 1-1.

The Huskies’ second goal came near the end of the game when Dodge took a corner kick and Keys came in to score it.
