Sweet Home’s boys tied Taft 1-1 Thursday in Lincoln City to bring their Val-Co League record to 0-2-1 as they finish the first rotation of league play this week.
The Huskies went up 1-0 in the first half against the Tigers after Alex Santana scored on short shot into the top of the net from the right side.
“We spent most of the time on their end of the field,” Coach Al Grove said of the first half. He said the game was tough in that Sweet Home didn’t get the calls in the second half. With five minutes to play, Taft was awarded a penalty shot and scored to tie the score.
“We had a couple of breakaways where our kids ended up flat on the ground and (Taft) didn’t get the ball,” Grove said.
The Huskies had a bye on Tuesday and will play at Newport Thursday.
Philomath 3, Sweet Home 1
On Tuesday, Oct. 2, the visiting Warriors scored early to take a 1-0 lead, but Brock Crocker nailed a penalty shot that glanced off the goalie’s hand to even the score going into halftime, 1-1.
The second half did not go well for Sweet Home, Grove said.
“That was a tough loss,” he said, “We outshot them. It was unbelievable how many shots we got. We hit every crossbar.”
Philomath scored two more in the second half to ice the win.
“We’re playing a lot better,” Grove said of the Huskies’ improvement thus far. “But I’m not happy with ties and I hope the kids aren’t either.”
