Boys top Newport and Stayton in track; girls third

Despite having some regular scorers out of action due to sickness or injury, the Sweet Home track and field boys squad still beat Newport and Stayton Thursday at Newport.

The Huskies scored 76 points to Stayton’s 71, with the Cubs a distant third at 36 points.

The Sweet Home girls were third, with 45.5 points behind Stayton (71.5) and Newport (64).

“Had we had a full girls complement, and stuck our people in their main events, loaded up, I think we would have beaten Newport,” Coach Billy Snow said of the girls. “We were looking to get people qualified for the Meet of Champions.”

That meet will be held Saturday, April18. at Willamette University and is limited to athletes who post qualifying times or marks.

Snow said that, as of Monday, he had 23 athletes in 56 events qualified for the meet, including both boys relays and the girls short relay.

“We’ll have a pretty good showing up there this year,” he said.

Though Alex Santana did not compete for the boys, sophomore Tim McDowell made his first appearance of the season, placing second in the high jump and third in the javelin.

He also ran a leg of the 4×100 and 4×400 relays, both of which finished first.

“Having Tim back was a big help,” Snow said, noting that the 4×100 relay squad had three runners who have not competed in the event this year €“ McDowell, Dakotah Keys and Alex Coakley. With Keys anchoring, they ran 44.76 to finish nearly three seconds ahead of second-place Newport.

McDowell anchored the 4×400 relay team with the fastest split of the day, 53 seconds as the team, which was missing its two fastest regular runners in Santana and Rob Callagan, finished first anyway.

“We’ve been looking for that,” Snow said of that mid-50s split. “Tim had to chase a guy at the end.”

Other notable performances for the boys came from Chris Thompson in the 1500, Casey Keys in the 3000, and Sam Macklin, who PR’d to win the 100 in 11.55.

Marc Callagan had an “off day,” Snow said, but still managed to win the shot put and take second in the discus behind Newport freshman Oshay Dunmore, who also won the triple jump and the pole vault.

Dakotah Keys and Jake Comstock went 1-2 in the 110 hurdles, Keys running a blazing 15.02 and Comstock finishing in 16.16, two-hundredths of a second shy of his personal best, leaving the rest of the field (led by Dunmore in third) nearly two seconds behind.

“It was beautiful to watch,” Snow said. “They were low, but I don’t think they ever clipped a hurdle.”

On the girls side, Maria Kropf did not compete, which left lacking her probable first-place finishes in three individual events and the 4×100.

However, even without Kropf, the short relay squad overcame a botched baton exchange to finish first anyway, in 55.54, after Newport was disqualified, Snow said.

Olivia Johnson and Carissa Swanson finished second and third in the 1500, behind Stayton’s Emily Hendricks, who won three events €“ the 1500, 3000 and high jump, and placed third in the javelin.

“Olivia and Carissa are going to give us a good 1-2 punch in the 1500 and 3000,” Snow predicted.

Jenny Hamn set a 1-foot personal best in the shot with a throw of 33-06, while Annie Whitfield won the javelin (116-06) and Kaitlin Keenon finished first in the triple jump (30-06).

Sweet Home hosted Philomath on Tuesday, April 14, and then will compete at the Meet of Champions beginning at 11:30 a.m. at Willamette University in Salem. The Huskies will face Philomath and Taft at 4 p.m. Tuesday, April 21.
