Sweet Home’s boys showed they can run with some of the state’s top teams Saturday at the Junction City Invitational track and field meet, taking first place in the team standings behind seven individual or relay team victories by the Huskies.
They also showed they are a legitimate threat to challenge for the Val-Co district title in May as they beat Central and Newport, along with regular powerhouse Siuslaw, in the meet, which was limited to three individual events per athlete and was scored Wisconsin-style, meaning every finisher earned points.
The Sweet Home girls were sixth in the eight-team field as Siuslaw dominated their competition.
“We had a pretty good day overall,” Coach Billy Snow said. I kind of thought with the guys team we would be pretty competitive.”
Dakotah Keys won three events and anchored the winning 4×400 meter boys relay team to first place, while Land Florek added two more wins, in the 200 and 400, and ran the decisive third leg of the 4×400 relay. In the 100, Alex Santana took the individual title and then helped the 4×100 relay team to a second-place finish, just over three-tenths of a second behind Central.
Snow noted that it wasn’t just Keys who made the win happen for the Huskies.
“You take away Dakotah’s 96 points and we still would have won,” he said. “Hopefully, it will tell the guys that if we work together we can win as a team, we can accomplish some things.”
In the girls competition, Ashley Danielson set a huge PR, a new school record and cracked the top-10 list of 4A best marks in the javelin with a throw of 116-3, nearly 13 feet over her previous best, set at the Sweet Home Heptathlon. Danielson beat Nicole Burnside’s record of 111-07, set in 2002.
Amanda Basham won the 3000 meters and placed second in the 1500 to give the girls their other victory.
The Huskies had a number of girls trying events for the first time and they were a little green, Snow said.
“We are very young and inexperienced on the girls side,” he said.
Also, the wind and rain made competing hard, he added. Snow said it was cold and the wind blew steady the entire meet.
“In the 3000, the runners were on (pace) for the first lap or two, then everyone would slow down four or five seconds per lap due to the wind.”
The one exception was Danielson’s record throw, which was into a crosswind.
“She had two over the old record,” Snow said.
The Huskies will be back on the road Thursday, meeting Newport, Philomath and Stayton at Newport at 4 p.m.
