Boys win; girls lose numbers game in swim meet

Numbers took their toll Friday for the Sweet Home girls swim team, but the boys pulled off a win over Sisters and Stayton despite the absence of two of their top swimmers, who were at a club meet.

The boys scored 130 points, ahead of Sisters (94) and Stayton (48), but the girls, missing two of their top performers, didn’t have the team depth to compensate. Sisters won with 122 points, with Stayton second (93) and the Huskies third (60).

The win leaves the boys undefeated against District 3 competition and the girls have only lost twice, despite the fact that the team is three-quarters the size of last year’s, which won the district title.

Coach Doug Peargin said his teams are “right where we need to be to have a good one” with the district meet less than two weeks away, on Feb. 10-11.

The boys were led by wins from Victor Stupin in the 200 Individual Medley (2:28.19) and Don Rockstead in the 500 Freestyle (5:26.79, a personal best) and the 100 Backstroke (1:01.25). The boys also won all three relays.

Kimber Swanson won the 200 Freestyle for the girls, swimming 2:15.42.

Peargin noted that even though his team is tired, they still swam well, posting a number of personal bests, and he said times should start dropping as the Huskies finish the daily doubles – morning and evening – that they’ve been swimming since mid-December.

“As we start to rest up and taper, these times should get quite a bit faster,” he said.

In addition to Rockstead, personal bests were set by Katie Turner in the 200 IM and 100 Freestyle, Emily Thompson in the 500 Freestyle, Paige Sanders in the 50 and 100 Freestyles, Shiho Harada in the 200 Freestyle, Zach Pratt in the 200 Freestyle and 100 Butterfly, Zane Jackson in the 100 Freestyle, Victor Stupin in the 500 Freestyle, Dima Gourley in the 50 and 100 Freestyles, Ryan Yon in the 200 IM, and Justin Hilburn in the 200 IM and 100 Freestyle.

The Huskies will be back in action Thursday, Feb. 2, for their final home meet, against North Marion, at 4 p.m.
