Boys win one, lose two on diamond

Sisters 12, Sweet Home 5

Sisters broke open a close contest with Sweet Home in the top of the fifth and built a dominating lead on its way to a 12-5 win in baseball on Friday at Sweet Home.

The Outlaws scored a run in the first inning and again in the third to take a 2-0 lead. The Huskies scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the third to tie the game, but Sisters brought another run home and took a 3-2 lead in the top of four.

Sisters broke the game open in the top of the fifth, scoring eight runs to lead 11-2.

“We came back and scored a few (three in the fifth),” said Coach Dan Tow. “Unfortunately, we were in too big a hole.”

All year long, when another team makes a run at the Huskies, Tow said, “we usually answer and score more runs of our own.”

Sisters had been undefeated in league since 2011. Cottage Grove, undefeated this year in league, ended that streak two weeks ago.

“I certainly think we can compete with them,” Tow said. “We certainly did that the other day till that big inning. It comes to who plays better that day. We’re certainly confident we can compete with them.”

At the plate, Brett Blachly, Justin Tow, Kevin Seiber, Hunter Jutte and Dan Virtue each contributed two hits, Jutte and Virtue with doubles. Brandon Keenon contributed a double.

Blachly, Keenon, Seiber, Jutte and Virtue each batted in a run, while Joe Salsbery, Blachly, Seiber, Jutte and Colyn Van Eck all scored runs.

Salsbery started at pitcher and recorded the loss, giving up six hits, five earned runs and five walks while striking out three. Keenon pitched two innings, giving up a hit and a walk and striking out two. Seiber pitched an inning, giving up seven hits and six earned runs.

“Last week was tough because we had to play three games in three days,” Tow said, but he is pleased with his team and looking forward to this week’s schedule, with games scheduled at Cottage Grove on Wednesday and at home against Junction City on Friday.

Sweet Home is 1-2 in league play and tied for fourth place with Junction City.
