Sweet Home’s boys won their second straight Oregon Wrestling Classic championship Saturday, Jan. 18, with a defeat of Crook County for the second year in a row in the title match.
- The boys ran the table in their six duals, against Madras (76-4), Molalla (53-24), Marshfield (73-6), Scappoose (69-10) and Cascade (61-16), before defeating Crook County 48-26 in the 4A Division final to win the championship.
- La Grande was third, Cascade was fourth, Pendleton was fifth and Tillamook was sixth in the championship bracket.
“It’s always good when you get to wrestle somebody like a Crook County,” said Coach Steve Thorpe. “They’re one of the best in the state, year in and year out. They’re not an accident.”
The Cowboys won three of the first four matches, but Dylan Davis upset Crook County’s Chance Yancey with an 8-3 decision at 132 and that turned the tide for Sweet Home, Thorpe said.
“He got a win over a really good kid and that kind of sparked us in the dual.”
Jesse Landtroop pinned his way through the tournament at 120 pounds, wrestling all six matches.
Ashton Swanson went undefeated in four matches at 190 and Thorpe said Jacob Landtroop would have been undefeated at 165, except that officials disqualified him for what they said was an illegal body slam, which Thorpe said shouldn’t have been called that way. Davis also went undefeated.
Riley Vaughn, who went 5-1 at 113 – his only loss a 4-2 decision, “looked awfully tough too,” Thorpe said, adding that Lynkin Royer performed well in the upper weights.
He also noted that Luke Rosa at 175 pinned Marshfield’s Aryan Wright in 5:20, “who had beat him very badly” earlier in the season.
“Luke got one of those redemption matches,” he said.
Up next for the Huskies is the Reser’s Tournament of Champions this weekend at Sherwood High School.
Thorpe said that Sweet Home’s biggest focus starting now will be preparing for the district tournament, which will be Feb. 22, at Philomath.
Girls win Platinum Cup title
The girls placed third in their preliminary pool on Friday, then on Saturday beat Harrisburg 36-35 to win the Platinum Cup. Tillamook was third and Rainier placed fourth in that division.
The Huskies went 3-2 on Friday in the pool round, losing to McNary 54-30 in their opening match, then falling to Redmond at the end of the day 42-24. In between, they beat Harrisburg, a team that has beaten them earlier this season, 36-24, Grant Union 42-32 and North Valley 53-18.
“Both those teams are pretty tough, Coach Tomas Rosa said of McNary and Redmond.
He noted that Sweet Home has been depleted by injuries and some departures and “we decided we were going to focus on who was here and do great things with those kids.”
They did, he said.
The Huskies went undefeated in the Platinum Cup round, which included teams that had finished third and fourth in the pool round, to win that competition on Saturday, capping that run with a 36-35 win over Harrisburg.
Bailey Chafin went undefeated at 125 pounds, including a pin in 2:58 over Redmond’s Mia Pederson, who had defeated her earlier this season.
A key performance came from freshman Bella Rico in the final match, who had lost by a fall to Harrisburg’s Lily Ridgley in their Friday match, but managed to “defend everything that kid was throwing at her” in the final match to finish with a 16-1 loss by tech fall, which gave Harrisburg five instead of six points.
“She made sure she didn’t get pinned,” Rosa said. “She said, ‘I told myself I wasn’t going to get pinned.’
“It was a good lesson for those girls to learn: Sometimes, when you’re outgunned, you can still win the match. A lot of victories take place outside of just getting your hand raised. She saved us a team point.”
Rosa noted that both the girls and boys have wrestled the “toughest” schedules in the history of the school this year.
“It’s hard, but we saw it pay off over there,” he said. “They’re being prepared.”
