The Philomath Relays were a non-scoring meet, but if anyone was counting, it was clear that Sweet Home’s boys were the dominant team, winning all but one of their eight races Thursday, Dec. 10, at Philomath.
The girls weren’t far behind, winning five of their seven races.
“This meet is a non-scoring meet that enables your entire team to be able to compete,” Coach Doug Peargin said. The meet is all relays and covers all the competitive swimming strokes, he said.
Philomath edged the Husky boys by two-tenths of a second in the 200 Backstroke Relay, 2:00.96 to 2:01.10 in the most competitive finish of the day for the boys. In the closest race of the day, Sweet Home was edged by the Warriors in the Mixed 200 Freestyle Relay, the last race of the day in which Peargin entered his two sets of boy-girl siblings, Naomi and Gravy Gunselman, and Byron and Paige Sanders, who were touched out by Philomath’s team by 4-hundredths of a second.
“I was pleased with the team’s overall performance,” Peargin said, noting that he took 38 swimmers to the meet and all were instrumental in their relay teams placing in at least one event. The Huskies posted 16 personal best times as well.
“We continue to improve as a team and if we stay on course, we should be a force to reckon with this February when we go into the district championships.
