Boys win two, lose close one

Marshall 56, Sweet Home 52

After an dominating early lead, Marshall High School went on a run to catch up and narrowly defeat the Huskies, 56-52, in boys basketball in a tournament at Gladstone.

The Huskies led 13-3 after one quarter, and one point they extended the lead to 20-3. By halftime, their lead had evaporated to 30-25. They extended their lead to 45-35 by the end of the third quarter.

“Initially, we handled their pressure very, very easily,” Coach Kostanty Knurowski said. “We kept our heads up, kept finding the open guy, did a nice job ball handling, pushing the ball ahead and getting some easy buckets.”

“We gave up a considerable lead, and it was a pretty tough loss for the boys,” Knurowski said. Marshall is probably the most athletic team the Huskies will face.

The Huskies finished second in the Gladstone tournament.

Sweet Home 68, Scappoose 57

The Huskies defeated Scappoose 68-57 during the Gladstone tournament.

Scappoose led 12-6 after a quarter, but the Huskies went on a run in the second to lead 27-25 at halftime. The Huskies led 46-41 after three quarters.

“I thought we did a pretty decent job in this game,” Knurowski said. The Huskies turned the ball over early on, and Kauffman picked up two fouls early on.

“The kids really did a nice job in this game making adjustments and playing a long stretch without Gavin,” Knurowski said. “Felkins did a really nice job, especially while Gavin was out.”

Scappoose went to a zone in the second half, he said, and White brought a threat from the outside to counter the strategy.

Sweet Home 54, North Marion 48

The Huskies won a tight game 54-48 against North Marion on the road on Dec. 14.

“It was really kind of back and forth,” Knurowski said. The Huskies struggled a bit under North Marion pressure as their opponents denied the ball to point guard Dallas Morgan. The Huskies had to start plays with other players.

Felkins got hot and nailed four buckets, Knurowski said, and the Huskies defense was intense.
