Boys wrestling: Huskies down Estacada in Senior Night visit

Sweet Home said good-bye to its departing senior wrestlers Thursday evening, Feb. 3, and then the Huskies got down to business to give them something to remember.

The boys defeated Estacada, which had agreed to make the trip so Sweet Home could have a Senior Night after Banks, which was scheduled to wrestle that evening, backed out at the last minute.

“I’ve said it many times, but I appreciate Estacada showing up, giving us a team to wrestle,” Coach Steve Thorpe said. “Every senior that could wrestle that night wrestled. We finished up Senior Night in a very good way.”

Try 64-6. The Rangers are no pushover, with ranked wrestlers in a number of weights, but they were not a match, scoreboard-wise, for the Huskies Thursday.

Kyle Sieminski, at 106, got things started with a decisive pin of fourth-ranked Nehemiah Gaul, and Evan Ashcraft, who moved up to 113, followed up with an equally decisive win over Sebastian Bobadilla.

That led to a sweep through the heavyweight position, where Estacada’s veteran Devin Gotchall scored the Rangers’ only points with a pin of Dakota Melkvik.

“It was very excited, the atmosphere we had,” Thorpe said. “I’m pretty proud of what our kids did that night, and the support they got from the community, the parents and the school.”

On Tuesday the Huskies scored dual wins over Siuslaw (69-12) and host Philomath (58-18) to wrap up their league dual season.

Sweet Home will compete Saturday in what will be this year a one-day Special District 2 tournament hosted by Siuslaw. Wrestling starts at 10 a.m. The school is suggesting a limit of two spectators per athlete entered. Tickets are only available online at
