The third annual Bras Across the Bridge fund-raiser to combat breast cancer raised $900, organizers said.
The event, titled “Stepping up to the Line and Bowling a Strike against Breast Cancer,” attracted some 25 participants to Weddle Bridge at Sankey Park Sunday, Aug. 27. The money raised will go to the Soroptimists International club in Albany to be used for awareness, diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer.
The event was organized by the South Santiam Sweet Potato Queens, who turned out in hot pink bowling outfits. It included live music by Pam Massey and Steven Mankle, hot pink bra charms for each participant and a bowling tournament on the bridge.
“We had so much fun with our bowling tournament,” organizer Rogene Stock said. “Have you ever seen what a brisk bridge breeze can do to plastic bowling balls and pins?” Three winners, Diana Johnson-Sosa, Karen Brown and Katy Duncan, each won a coveted 2011 Bra Trophy!
The Grand Raffle Prize of a Queenly “Gen-u-ine Southern Dinner” went to Jan Hufford-Wilson. The dinner menu will include Being Dead is No Excuse Salad, from the book The Southern Ladies Guide to a Perfect Funeral, with Mississippi Cheese Straws, followed by main course Texas Baptist Church Ladies’ fried chicken, Memaw’s Sunday Sweet Potatoes and Brother Will B.
