Bryce Nichols, Ricky Yunke lead Huskies in Rose City tourney

Bryce Coulter finished second and Ricky Yunke was third at the Rose City Championship wrestling tournament held Friday and Saturday at Westview High School.

Sweet Home had four place-winners in the tournament, which featured 25 teams from Oregon and Washington, the majority from 5A and 6A-level schools.

Coulter, a senior, was second at 182; Yunke, also a senior; was third at 152, sophomore Nich James was fifth at 170 and junior Robbie Yunke was sixth at 138.

The Huskies placed 11th, with 142 points, directly behind Lebanon, which had 146. Newberg was tournament champion with 290 points, followed by Dallas (217) and Thurston (191).

Tillamook was fifth, with 184.

“Tillamook is very good,” Sweet Home Coach Steve Thorpe said. “They are an improved team this year.”

The Huskies hosted and defeated Harrisburg (67-0), South Albany (63-18) and Stayton (70-6) on Tuesday in their first home meet of the year.

Thorpe said the lopsided scores were, in part, due to a lack of a full team on the part of all but South Albany.

“It’s always good to come in and win matches at home,” he said. “The competition was not as I had wished.”

Still, he said, junior Robert Watkins had a key 2-1 win at 126 pounds over Chance Hendrickson of Harrisburg, whom Watkins had never defeated, and, after breaking his thumb in the South Albany match, pinned the Rebels’ Anthony Pulido.

“Robert set a new standard for toughness,” Thorpe said.

Sophomore Jackson Royer scored another quality win, he said, beating Harrisburg’s Riley Suttles 6-0 at 132 pounds.

Also, at 113 pounds, junior Marissa Kurtz pinned South Albany’s Eddie Torres.

At Rose City, the competition was a lot stiffer.

“It’s just a tough, tough tournament,” Thorpe said. “Hats off to Bryce Coulter, finishing second with two huge wins against West Linn kids, one in overtime. Ricky Yunke is getting better and Nich had a great tournament to place as a sophomore.”

“It’s a grind of a tournament and we had several kids a match away. No one is losing to bad wrestlers in that tournament.”

One of those who came up slightly short, junior Damion Schocker, had a bit of a run in the consolation bracket after being pinned in his opening match, winning the next three by falls before being eliminated one match short of a podium spot.

“Damion, he did a good job,” he said. “I’m proud of him. This is the best he’s ever done in tournament, as far as competing, placing.”

On Saturday, in a girls tournament called War of the Roses, sophomore Lexi Schilling placed second at 105 pounds, with freshman Jessy Hart third at 125 pounds.

“That was a big thing at this stage of her career,” Thorpe said of Schilling’s finish.

He said his other female wrestlers, senior Madelyn Neuschwander (117), sophomore Katen Edwards (145) and freshman Sicily Neuschwander (105) all won matches.

This week Sweet Home will wrestle in tournaments at Lebanon beginning at 11 a.m. Friday, Dec. 15, and at Thurston Saturday, Dec. 16, beginning at 9 a.m.

“I’m not happy where we are at yet, but I know this is a process and we will work to get there,” Thorpe said. “We are still young and we’re taking lot of inexperience into tournaments like (Rose City). I’m proud of how the boys competed.”
