Bus drivers place in state contest

Two bus drivers placed in the Oregon Pupil Transportation Association’s Regional Safety Exercise competition on May 19.

In general transit, those bus drivers who have been certified more than a year, Penny Spears placed fifth. In novice transit, those certified under a year, Krystal Eddington placed third. Eddington went on to state and placed fifth.

Competing were Ina Lee, Eddington, Spears and Denise Roberts.

“I thought they did really well,” Transportation Supervisor L.D. Ellison said. “I think it speaks highly of our training program and the caliber of our drivers.”

Credit goes to the district’s trainer, Cheryl Hicks, Ellison said. The last three years, School District 55 has had a driver in the top five at state.

Ellison’s son, Chris Ellison, tied for a first-place finish this year and will travel to nationals representing Eugene School District 4J and Oregon. This is the last year he will compete. Next year, he becomes a trainer for District 4J.
