Busy week adds seven dual wins for Husky wrestlers

It’s a short season and Sweet Home wrestlers hit the accelerator last week, with eight matches in three days.

“We had a full week of wrestling,” Coach Steve Thorpe said.

The Huskies hosted North Marion, Siuslaw and Junction City on Wednesday, May 26, packing all four teams and some parents into the Activity Gym because a girls basketball game was taking place in the Main Gym. They won all three matches by decisive margins.

“For us it was like wrestling camp,” Thorpe said, noting that the Huskies got some match-ups they were looking for. “We got some good work.”

There were a few unfortunate losses, but Kyle Watkins and Trenton Smith, in particular, had a good night, with some quality wins, he said.

Smith lost to Junction City’s Evan Potter at 138 pounds, but Thorpe said his sophomore “competed very well” against one of the top-ranked wrestlers in the state.

Tristan Spencer pinned Elijah LaCosse of Siuslaw, who had beaten him last year in the district tournament. On the girls side, Paige Chafin had a good night, Thorpe said.

On Thursday, at Stayton, the Huskies beat both the hosts and Elmira.

Brayden Newport had a good night, beating Elmira’s Ruben Fox 6-3 at 152 pounds, up a class from Newport’s normal weight. Freshman Ryker Hartsook filled in at 145 and came away with two pins. Jesse Jamison, who struggled in the Junction City match, got “back on track and wrestled well” at 160, Thorpe said.

“We are not at full strength right now,” he said. “We have guys out with illness and injury.”

On Friday, Sweet Home was in Redmond for the Friday Night Lights tournament, facing the hosts, Mountain View and Ridgeview, all 5A schools.

The Huskies beat Redmond and Ridgeview, but lost 48-33 to Mountain View, though Thorpe noted that the actual difference was two matches.

“We had a couple of matches we probably shouldn’t have lost and we had too many falls,” he said. “We’re working on that already.”

Newport and Jamison both wrestled well, the latter coming away with three wins on the mat, and sophomore Brandon Elder stepped into the varsity line-up and got a quality win in pinning Redmond’s Cutter Woollard.

Sophomore Jake Sieminski put on a dominating performance, coming away with three wins to make it a perfect week for him in the win-loss column.

“He got two falls against quality wrestlers from Redmond and Mountain View,”: Thorpe said. “When you get that, you have to be excited about the direction you’re going.”

The Huskies will host Cascade, Marshfield and Philomath at 5 p.m. Thursday, June 3, which will also be Senior Night in the Main Gym. On Saturday they will compete in the Linn County Championships in Scio, which will be held outside.

“Philomath’s really good this year,” Thorpe said. They’ve got some good kids that go outside of their school for club stuff. It’s made a difference.

“Right now, we’re not where we need to be, but we’re getting there, getting closer,” Thorpe said. “In such a shortened season, we’re in a sprint right now. The process is really speeded up.”
