The Huskies boys summer basketball team defeated Junction City and Gladstone at home on June 9.
They opened the night against Junction City, playing a close game that went to three overtimes before the Huskies defeated the Warriors by about five points.
“They played very well,” Coach Kostanty Knurowski said of Junction City. “It was a pretty close game. We didn’t come and play as well as we had in other games.”
In the last overtime, the Huskies came out with trapping and fouling Junction City allowing the Warriors to score first, he said, but the pressure took Junction City, a ball control team, out of its element.
Against Gladstone, coached by former Sweet Home soccer and basketball coach Karl Schmidtman, the Huskies came out with a lot more intensity, Knurowski said. They continually built a lead throughout the game, trading runs with Gladstone. By the second half, the Huskies generally led by 10.
The Huskies are 4-1 in summer play.
The junior varsity one won its games against Junction City and Gladstone. The team also played six games at a Cottage Grove tournament over the weekend, but Knurowski did not have details available on Monday. The team was 6-0 headed into the tournament.
“So far this summer, they’ve done pretty well,” Knurowski said.
The junior varsity two team has been filling in most of the freshman schedule, with freshmen playing on that team as they are available. The team is 8-6 after going 4-2 at the Cottage Grove tournament and beating East Linn Christian Academy Monday evening.
“It’s been a pretty good summer so far,” Knurowski said.
Coming up, the Huskies will host a camp June 22 to June 25 at the high school for last year’s first- through eighth-grade boys and girls. The cost is $50, and registration is open until the day camp starts.
Grades one through four will attend from 9 a.m. to noon each day. Grades five through eight will attend from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.
