Calpooia Watershed Council meets tonight in Brownsville

The Calapooia Watershed Council annual meeting will be held at 7 p.m. on May 12.

The meeting is open to the public and will be held at Brownsville City Hall.

For more information, persons may call Bud Baumgartner of the Calapooia Watershed Council at (541) 367-5811.

The meeting will feature special guest speaker Kat Beal, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

She will speak about the current western pond turtle population in Oregon. It is thought to number less than 10 percent of the historical population.

The greatest decline in Western Oregon has been in the Willamette Valley and has been attributed primarily to habitat loss as a result of agricultural and urban development, flood control and predation by exotic species.

Elections for steering committee positions will also take place that evening. To nominate yourself or a neighbor for a leadership role on the council, persons may call Bud Baumgartner at 367-5811.

The council is a citizen group dedicated to the mission of providing opportunities for cooperation in promoting and sustaining the health of the watershed and its communities. Membership is free and open to anyone interested in the Calapooia River or its tributaries.

Communities within the council include Albany, Tangent, Brownsville, Crawfordsville and Holley.
