Calvin Brown of Sweet Home is one of three Oregon college students who received Workers’ Memorial Scholarships for the 2001-02 school year in the governor’s ceremonial office in the Capitol Building.
State Rep. Diane Rosenbaum, Dist. 14; Danny Santos, education policy coordinator, Office of the Governor; and Peter De Luca, administrator, Oregon OSHA, attended the ceremony.
The Department of Consumer and Business Services Oregon Occupational Safety and Health Division (Oregon OSHA) presented the awards to Patrick Oropallo of Ashland, Sarah Baldwin of Portland and Brown.
Brown was awarded $5,000 to attend the University of Oregon to pursue a double major in business administration and Japanese.
In 1999, Brown lived in Tokyo, Japan, as an exchange student. Despite not having studied Japanese prior to his trip, he became proficient in the language and placed fourth in a Japanese speech contest.
His volunteer service includes delivering Thanksgiving food baskets to the needy, volunteering as a sound technician mixer at a benefit concert for the homeless and volunteering for the Boys and Girls Club.
Brown’s main objective, he wrote in his application, is to pass on to his children the values and morals that his parents instilled in him.
